    tada!
well here's day one of my website's blog! thought i'd kick it off straight away with some w2k / xp quirkiness... for some reason my new win2k work laptop didn't want to use dhcp to initiate client to client ip address negotiation (well i think the w2k/xp oses allow for this). so in the end i had to give my desktop an ip address, but i was very relunctant to give my work laptop an ip address simply because all the sites i work on use dhcp. i don't fancy having to switch back and forced between static and dynamic all the time.

it's taken a few days for the concept of how route works to sink in and this afternoon i cracked it.

    route add <ip range> mask <netmask> <laptop's current ip address> metric 1

    et voila it worked!
